Is There an Indestructible Dog Toy?

We’ve all heard the claims; This toy can withstand 100 pounds of tugging pressure! This tug is bulletproof! Wild gorillas couldn’t destroy this toy! So you buy it, give it to your Chihuahua, and four minutes later it’s shredded on your kitchen floor.

What gives?

The truth is that there’s no such thing as an indestructible dog toy. There are varying degrees of toy strength, just as there are varying degrees of canine jaw strength. (And the size of the dog means nothing, right JRT people?) It’s impossible to say that any one toy can stand up to the rigors of every play style. The given? Plush toys aren’t built to last. There certainly are some stuffed toys that are tougher than most, but as a rule, the softer and cuter the toy, the more likely it is to die by evisceration.

Hard rubber toys are generally tougher, but some dogs don’t like them for that very reason. Where’s the fun if you can’t rip-shred-rip the darn thing? The exceptions are hard rubber toys designed to be stuffed with goodies. Packed properly (tight enough so that the treats don’t fall right out, but loose enough so your dog won’t get frustrated. More info here), they can entertain and stay in one piece.

Have you found an amazing dog toy that can stand up to your dog’s play style? Or is your dog capable of destroying every toy ever created? Tell us in the comments!

We bought a toy made by Go Dog. Our 95 lb. Goldendoodle has played with it now for 5 months and it is totally in tact. It comes with a guarantee that if the pet destroys it, send them a picture of the destroyed toy and they will replace it.

Just found a new toy from the Goughnuts company that may just do the trick. Check them out.

I have a rottweiler mix who is amazingly strong and had torn up every toy I've given her, especially balls. She destroyed all types of balls until I bought her The Huck Indestructible Ball. While not quite indestructible (she has been able to take some chunks out of it), she has had the ball for 4 years and I'm just now looking for a replacement. It's her favorite toy!

For those that have pups that love balls to play with, but destroy tennis balls in a second, try going to a sports store and getting lacrosse balls. I have had some for over six months now. They are very hard and my two 120 lb yellow labs have not destroyed them and do love chasing them.

We've bought the unstuffed fuzzy animals at WMart that say "3x strength" and they really are the strongest and last the longest. They do eventually get the squeaker torn out, but the fur has actually stayed intact for the most part. Think we paid around $5-6

I have a chihuahua that shreds EVERYTHING! But I find that for some weird reason, any stuffed animal that looks like a real animal (squirrel, frog, etc) she won't shred. She plays but doesn't shred. Like the AKC Kennel brand of toys. She like the pheasant and squirrel the best!
