Is There An Antidote For My Cat Who Ate Some Poinsettia Plant?

Q: I caught my cat just as he took a bite of a poinsettia plant. I gave him a little milk because I'd heard milk is an antidote to some poisons. A: While poinsettias should be avoided in pets their toxicity does tend to be over rated. These plants can cause irritation to the mouth and stomach. You may see vomiting or drooling which can indicate nausea. The signs are usually mild and will resolve on their own. If your pet is vomiting a lot it should be seen by a veterinarian so that it does not become dehydrated. There is no antidote and milk should probably be avoided since many cats are actually lactose intolerant!
