With the Thanksgiving Holiday upon us, Farm Sanctuary once again announces their Adopt-A-Turkey Project. This exciting event has been held annually since 1986 and has resulted in the sponsorship—or “adoption”—of hundreds of turkeys that now call Farm Sanctuary their home. For these fortunate gobblers, Thanksgiving is just another blissful and gratifying Thursday down on the farm.

The three Farm Sanctuaries are located in Watkins Glen, New York, Los Angeles and Oakland California. Their mission is the protection of industrialized farm animals, advocating for turkeys and other farm animals, public education informing folks about the fabulous mouth-watering alternatives available in preference to eating farmed meat and rescuing animals and sheltering them in their sanctuaries.

This year, Farm Sanctuary has joined up with Shannon Elizabeth, the renowned actress and former model, as their celebrity spokesperson for their Adopt-A-Turkey Project. If the concept of adopting a turkey remains novel to you, here’s the skinny:  For a one-time gift donation of $30, anyone can sponsor a turkey who resides at one of the three Farm Sanctuary shelters. Turkey sponsors will receive a special Adopt- A -Turkey certificate along with a color photo of the avian “adoptee”, and details about their very happy bird. But what is most exciting for turkey sponsors is that they will be making a new feathered friend.

The icing on the cake for anybody who’s been wracking their brains for a truly unique holiday gift to give that "special" someone who has everything is that turkey sponsorships will be sure to make an unforgettable impact.  For just $210 folks can sponsor the entire flock and have adoption certificates sent to their friends and family members.

Can’t decide which turkey to adopt? Farm Sanctuary has photos on their site of the 2012 adoption options. If these gorgeous birds can’t sway you with their image, hopefully the accompanying quotes will: Payton advises people to "Gobble up a meatless feast". Elizabeth says, “" All Hail Kindness." Gable chimes in by saying, “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a ham. (Leave all animals off the table).” Getting in his two cents, Skip remarks, “Remember me, Skip the turkey!” Thyme’s words of wisdom . . . , “Now is the Thyme to start a new Thanksgiving tradition: Adopt a turkey!”  And last—but certainly not least—Victoria echoes the Farm Sanctuary sentiments by saying, “Every compassionate Thanksgiving is a victory for farm animals.”

The Farm Sanctuary feels privileged to have these magnificent birds in their care. Virtual adoption through sponsorship not only makes a huge difference for the turkeys and other farm animals, but doing so will touch the hearts of everyone who loves them.

Have you ever considered becoming a virtual “adopter”? Tell us in a comment.

Inga said "what a load of crap!" just for the sake of irony, but I'll refrain

I think this is a great idea. I don't really know much about how turkeys are raised and never thought about it before. However, I think I would adopt a child, which my parents used to do. Both are worthy projects.

Sounds like a wonderful organization. Bless the turkeys that are saved. I will be eating an 18 pounder with family next week.

This is a really nice way to make a difference for those who celebrate that holiday. For those, like myself, who don't, it's still a good thing to do, to save a blameless life! (I'm not sure my feline family members would aree. But anyway.)
