The Sitting Greyhound

Published June 9, 2008
Some people believe that Greyhounds can’t sit because their conformation makes it impossible for them to assume the position. Harry begs to differ: All of a sudden, at Week 3 of training, Harry decided that he really, really likes to sit. So we’re going with it. Notice that I said “Harry decided” … sit can be an uncomfortable position for some of the longer limbed breeds, so I’d never force the position on a dog who was clearly uncomfortable doing it. That’s what “down” or a casual “stand-stay” is for, folks. Harry doesn’t seem to be bothered by it at all – he opts to “sit” instead of “down” these days – so we’re going to assume that it feels ok for him. Athena showed off her sitting skills during the lesson as well: (It could be because we mixed some cat treats in with the dog treats!)
