Hickory, a 5-year-old female, was called "well-balanced" and a "showman" by the judge -- Paolo Dondina of Monterchi, Italy -- who says he is a hound person. "I found the presentation superb," he says. "What can I say? This animal is like in the heavens. It's not of this world."

Hickory's handler, 31-year-old Angela Lloyd says, "She showed like she's never shown before. She was solid and steady," even as Hickory tried to edge away from the throng of press people surrounding her just after the show.

At that moment, Hickory was a little overwhelmed, says Lloyd. But she'll get her break, as she's going to retire this year.

Hickory prevailed against a group that the judge called one of the finest lineups he's ever seen.

Those included: The Sporting Group winner, GCh. Casablanca's Thrilling Seduction, a Black Cocker Spaniel; the Working Group winner, GCh. Aviators Luck Be A Lady, a Portuguese Water Dog; the Terrier Group winner, GCh. Slyfox Sneak's a Peek, a Smooth Fox Terrier; the Toy Group winner, GCh. Palacegarden Malachy, a Pekingese; the Non-Sporting Group winner, GCh. Vaje's Miss Jayne Hathaway, a Chinese Shar-Pei; and the Hedring Group winner, GCh. Tolkien Raintree Mister Baggins, a male Bearded Collie.

Finally! Something besides a Poodle. I don't even watch dog shows anymore because the Poodles always win.

The Deerhound is one of my favorite breeds. That photo is just terribly unflattering. They really are elegant dogs.

People - They do not just judge the dogs by their looks. It also has a lot to do with their demeanor. Hopefully your dogs are better behaved than most of you people, and Brad I hope you never have to be judged in a People show, because your demeanor is really ugly!!!!!

There are over 179 AKC breeds, which means there is a dog to please everyone. Mutts are great, too. The winning dog, a Scottish Deerhound, is a noble, ancient breed and this bitch was a beautiful example of her breed and she moved like she was floating on air. People, people, people just love your dog(s), whatever its breeding and stop being so snippy.

I agree with Pat, I don't think he's dog shows are healthy...the dogs should be dogs, and I absolutely think mutts are cuter, have more of a personality, and rule!!

I am a die hard animal lover, but I can't help but say this "winning" dog is one ugly dog. It looks like it was brought in off the streets and was never bathed. So many better looking breeds and they pick this one. How disappointing. I also agree with Pat's comment above.

maybe you can join up with toddlers and tiaras and dress the "Breed" dog up. these shows just indorse breeding for the perfect dog and not spaying and neutering. Any dog, no matter what it's linage, can be a loving, smart & joyful companion. MUTT'S RULE!!!
