Roll Over, Rover

Published October 30, 2007
Nothing says contentment like a dog rolling around in the grass. My guys love to do it. For Sumner, my boxer, it starts with an inkling. “The sun feels good. My belly is full. This calls for a roll.” He usually gets off to a slow start, with a languid paw stretch and a glance around the yard to see if anyone is watching: After a few moments of uninterrupted rolling he becomes transported, oblivious to everything around him: He gets pretty filthy in the process: And then he just stops. He’s done rolling for now, thank you: My guys have many reasons for rolling (to pick up disgusting odors, to claim a bone or toy as their own by putting their scent on it, to get my attention), but this one is my favorite. They look so blissful when they do it … I bet they’re thinking, “Life is good! Life is good! Life is good!” as they thrash around. Does your dog love to roll too? Is it a “glee roll” like my guys, or is it just to acquire eau de garbage?
