A: Dogs with lighter colored hair can experience staining from both their saliva and their tears. There are many over the counter products sold for this problem. If the product doesn't list its contents be sure to check with your veterinarian first. Angel Eyes is a popular product that does contain an antibiotic so should not be used forever. There are very safe over the counter eye washing solutions that can be used as needed. Ask your groomer to keep the hair near the corners of the eyes very short.

As for tear stains, and dark haired dogs have the problem, too...they feel it in their eyes, but their fur doesn't show it. A tablespoon or two of white vinegar(possibly cider would work also) in their drinking water for a couple of weeks. It takes time for the fur that is already stained to be cut off, or shed off in short haired dogs like mine. But on my little white Chihuahua mix, his eyes stopped looking gooey, and it cleared up immediately.
