Gradually introduce new dog food.

Q: I'm introducing new dog food into my dog's diet, but she always gets sick around the third day of the new dog food. Do you have any suggestions?

A: Dog food should be switched very slowly.

Perhaps you have been trying to change your dog over to her new dog food too quickly.

Here is a good pace for the process of giving your dog new dog food:

  • For the first 7-10 days feed her about 10% of the new dog food mixed with 90% of the old dog food. That is such a small amount that hopefully it won't affect her negatively.
  • Next increase the new dog food by 10% every week. After about 10 weeks your dog will be eating a full bowl of her new dog food!

It will take a while but it sounds like your dog has a very sensitive stomach. Also make sure that you are choosing a high quality dog food that is recommended by your veterinarian.
