Q: How Did My Dog Get Intestinal Parasites?

A: Most likely, your pet picked up intestinal parasites while on a walk or at a park. If your dog comes into contact with the feces of another dog that has parasites it can be transmitted. There are some parasites that can be transmitted from mothers to puppies but this is not the case in your dog!

Parasite infections are relatively common and usually easily treated. Be sure to thoroughly clean the areas where your pet has been to prevent your pet from being reinfected.

Our new dog (rescued from death row twice and picked up by a no-kill shelter) has had a history as a young puppy and later on with bloody stools and was treated for intestinal parasites. My question is will we need to watch her for any complications as she gets older? We love her very much and no amount of a "distant future" problem would cause us to give her up. We feed her high quality foods and suppliment some plain yogurt for her stomach health.

I have one year old mixed breed terrier/schnauser. I am visiting my daughrer in Flodida and found my dog has started throwing up her food. She has never done this before our visit. Could she have a parasite? I am concerned and not sure if I can wait till I get home next week to take her to the vet. Thank you for your input. Mrs D
