Psychic Octopus Picks Spain to Win World Cup

Published July 9, 2010

Paul, the German oracle octopus, has yet to call a World Cup match wrong.

And this morning, in his tank at an aquarium in the city of Oberhausen, Germany, he gobbled up a mussel from a box marked with a Spanish flag.

He ignored the Dutch mussel.

That's his way of saying Spain will win.

But while he had only local fans during the 2008 European Championship two years ago, his World Cup predictions have made him famous.

"Paul is such a professional oracle--he doesn't even care that hundreds of journalists are watching and commenting on every move he makes," said Stefan Porwoll, the Sea Life aquarium manager.

Spain's defeat of Germany in the semifinals, correctly predicted by Paul, lead to some grilled octopus death threats, but Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero offered "El Pulpo Paul," government-level protection.

"I am concerned about the octopus," Zapatero said.

"I'm thinking about sending in a team to protect the octopus because obviously it was very spectacular that he should get Spain's victory right from there."

Watch him make his pick below.
