A look at the Furminator, a pet grooming tool.

If you own a pet that sheds, you have probably heard a great deal about the FURminator deshedding tool. It is a lifesaver for dog and cat owners that cringe at the sight of pet hair tumbleweeds blowing through the house every shedding season.

The original FURminator has received rave reviews from pet lovers. But, if you thought the original FURminator is as good as it gets, you have to check out the new and improved line - the FURminator deLux Collection.

Petside was lucky enough to get a sneak peek when FURminator sent us a free brush to test before it hits stores on December 1st, 2009.

The new FURminator has the same brush that removes mountains of undercoat from cats and dogs, but with added comfort for the groomer. The handle has been redesigned for easier grip. And it really does help! The new thumb support makes it virtually impossible to drop the brush while grooming even the most fidgety pet.

FURminator also added a hair ejection button - the cleverly named FURejector. Now you never even have to touch the removed fur. Just push the button and the hair falls out of the tool.

The brush quickly and easily removed the overwhelming amount of undercoat my shedding Sheltie usually sprinkles around the house. My favorite part about the FURminator tool is how it untangles even the nastiest mats I find behind my dog's ears and in his armpits. Normally I would have to cut those mats out, but if I hold the base of the tangle with my fingers and work through it with the FURminator, the mat comes out and my dog didn't even notice that I was pulling on his coat.

I saw the real FURminator magic when I brush my cat, who is not nearly as cooperative when it comes to brushing. The FURminator tool is the only thing that she will let near herself. She purrs and sprawls out, letting me brush out the belly and chest. If I just hold the brush in front of her, she rubs the sides of her face in anticipation.

The Original FURminator was great, but now, with the newly added easy grip brush and the FURejector button, it is better than ever!

Remember to check your local pet specialty retailer or vet clinic on December 1st to grab the FURminator deLuxe Collection for you cat or dog.

Holly, YES, it absolutely tears the hair. I am also a professional groomer, and most of the groomers I know do not even have one in their arsenal. It's basically a #40 blade with a handle! And a #40 blade works better. I only EVER recommend the Furminator for dogs with very short brittle coats, like Dalmations or short haired Chihuahuas. This is because, when used on longer coats-even malamute/german shepherd type coats-the tines are not long enough to get to the root of the hair. So it only pulls from the ends of the hair shaft, which causes breakage and split ends. Also, using it too much/too often, too hard, or over and over in the same spot can cause an inflammation/irritation of the hair follicle called folliculitis. It looks like a rash almost. Lots of little raised bumps in the pore. If left untreated I've seen it become infected and actually damage the hair shaft, causing differently colored patches of hair or even permanent hair loss. Any tool that has so many caveats in order to use it, coupled with the absurd price, causes me to never, ever recommend this product. There are too many variables that can cause it to harm, and there are too many other wonderful products on the market that work just as well or better. Completely overrated.

I have heard that the Furminator actually tears the hair. Is this true? I have Malamutes, and have not purchased one. I cannot believe that it would actually penetrate their thick coat.

As a professional groomer, I was very disappointed in the Furminator. Other products work better and faster. I suggest using a Mars Coat King or similar product.

While i will agree that the furminator does get out a lot of loose fur, I will be selling mine on ebay. My cat hates it so much that after I brush her with it (she will try to bite me a few times during the process) she gets so agitated that she pukes up her breakfast about an hour later. This is an n of about 4 at this point. Works great, cat hates it.
