The Petside Digest: This Week's Must-Reads

Published April 8, 2011
Artist Provides Insight on Pet Emotion: Martin Usborne In a gallery on photographer Martin Usborne's website, the artist captures seemingly human emotions in a series of images involving dogs trapped inside cars. Reprising the feeling of universal loneliness that comes on when one is left alone for a period of time, the artist provides new insights into emotions and feelings that we often reserve solely for humans. The gallery serves as a constant reminder that, despite our capability for higher thought, we are, in the end, just rational animals who experience, in many ways, the same essential emotions that our pets do at times. Delta Bans Bulldogs: Atlanta Journal-Constitution After investigating the incidents in which 16 pets passed away on Delta Flights in 2010, Delta made a move to add bulldogs of any type to its no-fly list. As the Atlanta Journal cites, the airline "saw a pattern involving animals susceptible to respiratory problems." Breeds prone to these respiratory conditions such as bulldogs (who, with their snub noses, constituted 6 of the 16 flying deaths last year) suffered or died when they were held in the same confined spaces as pets of other breeds. On the whole, the move is welcomed by animal advocates, who are generally pleased that Delta is looking out for the welfare of its animal passengers. Do You Bite Your Thumb At Me, Sir?: Los Angeles Times Even to us pet nuts here at Petside, this is a bit bizarre. Apparently an Ohio man was cited and charged for a misdemeanor for barking at a police dog. Highly intoxicated, the Ohio man made hissing and barking sounds at a K-9 unit that was inside a police car. When asked about his actions, the man said that the "dog started it." Not sure how to react? Don't worry, because we're really not either. Is Your Hound a Hound for Television?: PawNation So why not end the news of this week's Digest on another light note from the folks over at PawNation? In their weekly segment "Pet on the Street", PawNation took the time to ask Chicago owners what their dogs like to watch on television. If you've ever had a pet that has a certain affinity for Animal Planet, or stares longingly at the television while you watch your favorite program, then you'll have a certain soft spot in your heart for this video. Check it out! Adoptable Pet of the Week: Sophie Sophie, pictured above, is a female Maine Coon who lives with her children in a rescue center in New York City. She is already spayed, house-trained, and up-to-date on all of her shots. She's looking for a home, and would love to snuggle up to you! Image Source: adoptapet.com
