The Petside Digest: This Week's Must-Reads

Animal Rights Group Falls Short of Purchasing NFL star Mike Vick's Compound: Fox News This week, it came to light that an animal rights group had fallen short of securing the necessary funds required to purchase NFL star Michael Vick's former dog-fighting compound. The group had planned to buy the compound and turn it into an animal rehabilitation center for chained and penned dogs. In order to purchase the facility, the group would have needed to raise $600,000. They have raised $130,000 to date, and have asked for a 30-day extension to attempt to secure financing for the project. Could you imagine it? How ironic would it be if Mike Vick's former compound would became a safe-haven for pets? Howard Stern's Stern Stance on Abandoning Animals: DogTime.com According to an article over at DogTime.com, shock jock Howard Stern apparently has a soft spot for the animal community. In a recent broadcast, Stern blasted animal owners who, for whatever reason, dump their pets. Inspired by stories that his wife tells from her experiences working at a local shelter, Stern expressed vehement disgust for those who abandon their pets, saying that pets are and should be treated as family members. Even if this doesn't inspire you to regularly listen to Stern's radio show, it's nice to know that someone with celebrity status is advocating on behalf of our furry friends. Animal Justice: New York Times According to the New York Times, crime lab technology meant to aid investigators in getting to the bottom of human-on-human crime is now being used to help animals that have been the victims of abuse. In a recent court case, DNA evidence was used to convict two separate offenders of animal cruelty in the New York area. The cases are monumental, and demonstrate how advances in technology don't just benefit us, but benefit our animal companions as well. It also kind of reminds us of a Law & Order episode. Anyone else? Purr On, Big Fella: Yahoo! A recent video posted on Yahoo examines Smokey, a cat who has captured headlines due to his excessively loud and constant purring. Newsworthy? We thought so. The sheer noise that emanates from this cat's being is pretty impressive. Check it out! Adoptable Pet of the Week: Beauty For this calendar week, our adoptable pet of the week is Beauty, a gorgeous Domestic Longhair rescued from an out of control feral cat colony. She is already spayed, up to date on her shots and is good with other cats. Now all she needs is a loving home! Image Source: adoptapet.com
