The Petside Digest: This Week's Must-Reads
Published February 16, 2011
From Post to Post, and Finally Home: MSNBC
Valentine's Day was this week, and so it's only appropriate to start this week's Digest off on a bit of a heart-warming note. If you've been following the Digest for the past couple of weeks, then you've undoubtedly heard of the infamous puppy mailer, and learned that she had justly been denied the right to get the dog she tried to send through the mail back. Well, this week we've learned that the puppy will finally have the opportunity to reach a new home, as it will be put up for adoption today! It's good to see this pup finally making it home.
Man Adopts Bolivian Circus Animals: The Wall Street Journal
And now we return to the curious cases the Digest has become accustomed to covering. As heartwarming as this next story is, it is also utterly unbelievable and bizarre.
As one might imagine, there was a bit of a problem posed when Bolivia decided to ban live animals from being used in traveling circuses, with the problem being, of course, that these animals would have no place to go. Obviously, those who thought this had never met former high-school math teacher and Colorado dweller Pat Craig, who inexplicably jumped on the opportunity to be able to house the disposed Bolivian circus animals.
Craig's home is now home to: 13 dogs, 5 cats, 3 parrots, 66 black bears, 70 tigers, 14 mountain lions, 5 leopards, 5 coati mundi, 3 foxes, a coyote, 2 prides of lions, 13 grizzly bears, 5 lynx, 3 packs of wolves, and 8 bobcats. Animal House, anyone?
Kitty's a Klepto...What?: ABC
That's right. Apparently there's actually a cat out in San Mateo (California), Dusty, that spends its night stealing neighbor's items that aren't locked down. Reportedly, the cat has stolen over 600 items in a 3 year period. Yikes! Dusty sure is a Devil--someone should keep that klepto kitty on night watch!
A Word On Westminster: Petside
It'd be impossible not to end this week's Digest with a nod to the 135th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. The event is, for all intensive purposes, a Mecca for dog lover's of all walks of life. The show concluded on Tuesday night, with the award for Best in Show being awarded to GCH Foxcliffe Hickory Wind, a Scottish Deerhound. Congrats, Hickory, you earned it!
Adoptable Pet of the Week: Barli RDV
This Golden Retriever was rescued from some serious abuse, and she's now ready to be cuddled and welcomed into a warm home! Barli is great with kids and other pets, and is a ball of energy sure to satisfy anyone who takes her home!
