The Petside Digest: This Week's Must-Reads
Published August 6, 2010
Justice for a Gunned Down Husky: Bear Bear, a beloved Siberian Husky, was fatally shot by an off-duty Department of Defense officer in a Maryland dog park this week.
The unnamed officer said Bear Bear was playing too roughly with his leashed German Shepherd. Initially, authorities weren't going to file charges but with the help of the Humane Society, local police are investigating. We're so glad they came to their senses. Thanks to OhMiDog for keeping us up-to-date.
Our Take on Dog Park Dos and Don'ts: In response to this awful, awful story, we posted some rules that we hope will restore order in the land of dog parks. Check out Dog Park Dos and Don'ts: For Starters, Don't Bring a Gun.
More Dog Park Manners: We love how Susan Kuchinskas at Family Goes Strong says that the whole point of a dog park is to lose the leash. Too bad that off-duty officer didn't read her post first.
Pit Bulls Save Chihuahua from Coyote: Dogtime's Editor's Notepad brings news of a Chihuahua that owes his life to some tender-hearted Pitties.
24/7 Help if Your Dog Ate Something Scary: Dog Jaunt's spokes pup, Chloe, may have given her mom, Mary-Alice, a late-night scare by chewing on a prescription bottle of eye drops, but a call to the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (1-888-426-4435 ) put things right.

Adoptable Pet of the Week - Penelope: We got a behind-the-scenes tour of Bideawee Animal Rescue Center in NYC yesterday and besides being awed by the amazing space, staff and good works that go on, we saw LOTS of adorable animals. I actually almost missed a meeting because I couldn't stop cooing with a certain charming coon hound mix puppy named Penelope (pictured above).
