Pedigree has been forced to recall some of its canned dog food products.

On June 30, Mars Petcare announced a voluntary recall of three of its varieties of PEDIGREE® canned food due to a choking hazard.

The recalled dog food has been distributed throughout the U.S. and includes cans of PEDIGREE® weight management canned dog food varieties with the following UPC codes:

  • 2310034974 Pedigree+ Healthy Weight Premium Ground Entree in Meaty Juices
  • 2310001913 Pedigree Weight Management Meaty Ground Dinner Beef & Liver Dinner in Meaty Juices
  • 2310023045 Pedigree Weight Management Meaty Ground Dinner Chicken & Rice Dinner in Meaty Juices

Each product will have a lot code printed on the end of the can that begins with 209, 210, 211 or 212 and a Best Before date that falls between 2/24/2014 and 3/23/2014.

According to Julie Lawless, Director, Issues and Corporate Communications, “Our manufacturing facility uses conveyor belts to move product throughout the production process.  A conveyor belt broke, and small pieces of the belt entered the food during the production process. (We resolved the issue by replacing the conveyor with a redesigned drive mechanism.)”

Mars is encouraging people who have purchased the recalled dog food to throw it away or return it for a full refund or exchange.

Some people have reported finding pieces of the hard blue plastic that is sized approximately 2/3 inch x 2/3 inch x 2/5 inch. To date, no injuries or illnesses have been reported.
