Our Cats' Mew Year's Resolutions

Published December 27, 2010
As the end of the year draws to a close, over the past few weeks, many folks have been thinking about and getting ready to commit to their New Year's resolutions. But I have often wondered, based on my own experience, just how many of these lofty goals are actually reached during the upcoming year. And as New Year's Eve approaches, I have to admit that I have been guilty on more than one occasion of breaking promises to myself, even though I am highly motivated when I make them. I am sure my husband Marty can identify with me on this traditional end of year ritual. And since our two cats Hubble and Hush Puppy are considered part of our family, I thought it extremely important to set aside some quiet time with them to explore any resolutions they think important, and to ask them if there is any way that Marty and I can do to help them keep on the straight and narrow path. Initially the cats must have thought I had lost my marbles for even broaching the subject, since they are so purrfect in every way, but being more flexible than some of your average kitties, they did take the time to give it some thought. Hush Puppy said, "We will get back to you shortly", yawned and started grooming his brother. I knew it was time to retreat and give them some time to think. And sure enough, the moment I was deeply engrossed in the Keith Olberman show, one of my favorite TV commentators, they both descended on top of me. Tearing myself away from a particularly juicy political tirade in the style for which Olberman is famous, I was delighted to learn our cats had actually formulated an impressive list of 5 resolutions. They gave me purrmission to share them with our readers so their pets might become inspired. Here they are! 1. The moment we are asked to do so, we will promptly jump off the dining room table while our humans are eating. 2. We will no longer sit glaring at our humans, making them feel guilty, while they are snacking on a tempting morsel not suitable for felines, refusing to give us any. 3. When our veterinarian makes a house call, we will not mortify our humans by dashing under their king size bed. 4. Since we know Meowmy is busy working to pay for our keep, we will not howl at her closed office door, making her feel that she is abandoning us. 5. We will eat anything that our pawrents put in front of us! Of course we will have to see if they can keep their promises. I am not holding my breath. Do your pets make New Year's resolutions? Puppy and Hubble made the purrfect resolutions, Jo! Maybe I can talk Samson and Delilah into making the same ones :).
