5 Organizations Providing Hurricane Sandy Safety Tips

Even in its early stages, Hurricane Sandy is wreaking havoc across the Eastern seaboard, crushing the mid-Atlantic region and causing flooding and other storm associated problems. As people try to make it to shelter, pet owners are put in a special predicament, as some shelters won't allow people to take their furry friends with them once mandatory evacuations are in place.

While many will lose electricity and access to news, mobile devices (if charged!) can provide an excellent way to find the latest information on the upcoming storm. With this in mind, we've found five organizations you should be following on Twitter to get tips and information on pet safety during today and tonight's rough weather. Using the hashtag #sandypets, people are staying connected and providing tips and assistance for pets that will be affected by this storm.

1. ASPCA (@ASPCA)

The ASPCA's overall mission is to help animals in need, and the crisis brought about by Hurricane Sandy is surely putting animals at risk. Throughout the torrential weather, the ASPCA has been diligently updating their Twitter account, providing listings of open shelters taking in animals to ride the storm out and providing safety advice to concerned pet owners.

2. North Shore Animal League America (@AnimalLeague)

The Long Island area will be hit hard by Hurricane Sandy, and so their most prominent animal shelter, North Shore, is taking action via their Twitter handle to educate concerned pet parents about hurricane preparedness. They've released a slew of safety tips on their account, and have also advertised the space they have for the pets of Nassau County residents who are being evacuated due to the impending storm. Follow them for continued safety tips that are universally applicable regardless of your location during this storm.

3. Humane Society of the United States (@HumaneSociety)

The Humane Society of the United States is doing their part to keep the public informed, posting updates on shelters and safety tips for their followers via their Twitter account. They are providing specific animal shelters in certain locations for concerned animal loving pet parents, and are providing safety tips and advice for pet owners affected by this storm.

Via their Twitter handle, the American Red Cross is providing shelter information and safety tips for people affected by Hurricane Sandy. Follow them on Twitter for the latest information as the storm conditions continue to worsen.
