Ohio Law: Pit Bulls Aren't "Vicious"

Ohio law now says that pit bulls are not "vicious dogs."

To say the least, it's been a controversial month for pit bulls. Earlier this month, the Maryland Court of Appeals ruled that pit bulls were an "inherently dangerous" dog breed, prone to aggression that results in dog bites. As such, the state ramped up regulations surrounding pit bulls and made owning the breed more difficult by holding not only dog owners responsible for their pup's actions, but holding landlords who rented to pit bull owners liable as well. The decision made animal rights activists and pit bull advocates furious.

In a story that seemed to almost counter Maryland's ruling, a hero pit bull named Lilly saved her owner from certain death on a set of railroad tracks, showing a softer side to the breed. The question of whether pit bulls were actually naturally dangerous was muddled even further. Now, the state of Ohio, which formerly had a hard line stance on pit bulls, has softened their feelings on the breed.

Maryland rules pit bulls "inherently dangerous"

According to an article on CBS News, a new Ohio law has redefined what it means to be a "vicious dog."

In the old law, a vicious dog was defined as a dog that "has seriously hurt or killed a person, killed another dog or is among those commonly known as pit bulls." The new law removes the references to pit bulls, and allows for pit bull incidents to be handled on a case by case basis.

The new move adds more fuel to the fire in the pit bull debate. The Maryland ruling had left many animal activists fearing that other states would proceed in a similar fashion in regard to their treatment of pit bulls, opening the door for widespread breed discrimination. The Ohio law seems to counteract that though. Perhaps the Ohio legislators were convinced by recent news events that pit bulls do have a softer side.

IT IS NOT THE DOG THAT IS VICIOUS OR DANGEROUS - IT IS THE STUPID PEOPLE THAT RAISE THEM TO ATTACK OR BE MEAN!!!!! GO AFTER THE OWNERS! A POODLE OR ANY OTHER DOG COULD JUST AS EASILY ATTACK SOMEONE! I RECALL WHEN EVERYONE USED TO WANT TO V=BAN THE DOBERMANS, THEN THE ROTTWEILERS, EVEN GERMAN SHEPHERDS - THE DOGS ARE ONLY GONNA LEARN WHAT THE HUMAN TEACHES THEM!!! AND IF YOU GET ANY DOG AND JUST LEAVE IT OUTSIDE WITH NO ATTENTION, NO LOVE, NOT ENUF FOOD OR WATER AND ON A SHORT, HEAVY CHAIN...WELL THERE YOU GO!

Its a proven fact that more golden retrievers bite people and other dogs every year than pits do in 3 years. The only reason you dont hear about it is because they americans #1 family dog. I have 2 pits just over a yr old and u couldnt make them bite someone. My 2.yr old.rides them like horses and bites them and they just lay there. The only.peoplem we have with pits is there big babies and dont realize they weigh 70 pounds when they want to lay in your lap all the time.

Pit bulls, or any dog breed, is vicious if given to the WRONG person. If they are vicious or dangerous, it is the OWNER'S fault - not thiers. It is all in thier raising, not in their blood. My brother's dog is half Pit half Boxer and he's nothing but a big puppy. The only thing dangerous about him is his sharp claws! LOL!

No dogs are born dangerous, They used to call the pit bull NANNY dogs. Its the humans that have given the Pit bull a BAD name. If the U.S starts to ban pitties, what breed is next? In the past I have had Dobbies,& Rotties which were considered dangerous dogs but tell that to my three sons when they were little and they would just laugh in your face. Now I own a mix pit bull which was found on the streets and he is the best friend we have in this house, other than my husband.

pitbulls are not dangerous its the owners who have them and teach them to be. No dog is born that way and they should NOT be labeld as such!!!!
