Anti-animal fighting bill is signed into law in New York
On August 4th, The New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed legislation to strengthen current laws to combat animal fighting. This closed a major loophole in NY state laws that allowed dog fighters and cock fighters to pose as spectators at these events.
Until now, a person attending these events was punished simply by a violation punishable with up to a $500 fine. Now, attending a dog fighting or cock fighting event will be counted as a class B misdemeanor, punishable by up to three months in jail and a $500 fine.
New York hopes to discourage people from attending these underground events by hitting attendees where it hurts.
The new law is strongly supported by Humane Society of the United States and the ASPCA.
