"American Stuffers" on Animal Planet, focuses on a family that makes a living from freeze-dries animals.
Ever wonder what goes on in the day-to-day life of a taxidermist? While you most likely haven't, a new reality TV series, "American Stuffers" on Animal Planet, explores just that.
The show chronicles the day-to-day lives of an at-home business (Xtreme Taxidermy) and family (Mr. and Mrs. Ross) in Arkansas who make a living out of freeze-drying pets, more generally known as taxidermy.
"American Stuffers" explores a life and business that, to many, is completely foreign. For most, taxidermy itself is a very touchy subject, and is a topic that animal lovers tend to go back and forth on.
What American Stuffers does well, however, is chronicle the deep bond between animals and humans. In reality television fashion, the show captures individuals who admire their animals so much that they cannot bear to physically part with them, and chronicles the life of a person who (however grisly it may seem) gives them that peace of mind.
Where do you stand in the taxidermy debate? Do you watch "American Stuffers?"

Happened to have animal planet on when Pet Stuffers came on. The pet stuffing grosses me out but people do what they have to do. What angered me about the show was this man that stuffs pets is also a hunter. He made sure that we all knew he has guns and bows all over his house. One of his son's guns just laying around like a toy. He had to yell at his kid to put it away. There are skulls all over the walls of his house. I couldn't watch anymore and changed the channel. I'm very angry and totally in shock that animal planet would promote a show like this. Makes me absolutely sick. I love animal planet but I'm boycotting. As long as they are promoting murder of animals I will not watch!
People are Failing each other. No wonder people are developing closer bonds with those angelic creatures that "Love" in every way that a Human can but ultimately won't. They "Forgive" and to too many people, pet's are what gets us through this hard and difficult life. It is not legal to have your pet buried next to you in your cemetary but it's okay to be buried in a yard full of horrible people, murderers, rapists, robbers, child molestors, etc. This is just one way that a "Devoted" pet owner has hope of being buried next to their most loyal companion in life. Hopefully, the funeral home will allow the pet to be buried with the owner since there is no decay to take place. There are so many things in this world that is wrong but preserving "love" isn't one of them. If it makes it easier for someone to grieve, don't judge them. This is still a free world and they aren't doing anything illegal. I stand opposed to the "KILLING" of innocent creatures for sport. Yeah, it's been ok forever to kill that innocent buck/doe and hang it on your wall but not ok to preserve the pet that Loved you through the worst times of your life. Go figure.
I stand against taxidermy! I think that this act is very disrespectful and demeaning to the animal. I agree with Patrish, the animals are much more beautiful in pictures and ALIVE, than stuffed and mounted. I think that people who hunt and do taxidermy are insecure and require killing innocent animals to make them feel in control and better about them selves. So NO to taxidermy, and no to the show. I know that the people's hearts- that have their pets "preserved"- are in the right place and are not trying to be cruel- but if I were the animal i would not want to be preserved and demeaned in that way.
I think it is totally gross. Would you want to freeze-dry your mother and keep her sitting on the couch? The answer is "No!". *Slaps forehead*. Have the same respect for your fur family members. They are family members, and not our "property". I say, move on and adopt a new fur family member from a shelter.
People are doing this more and more in hopes of being buried with their beloved pets which now isn't even legal to be buried 'next' to them. I don't think that many if any are doing this to sport their companions but rather to share their eternal resting place with them. Like I said, we aren't even allowed to be buried next to them unless you believe in cremation which is very hard for alot of people to accept.
My first reaction was - No, I couldn't do this. After having watched the show though, I'm rethinking pet preservation. The owner's reactions upon again seeing their beloved pet is very touching and genuine.
I felt the same way. The owners treat the pets and the humans with respect and compassion. I understand the love people bestow on their pets. Some parts were a bit more than I wanted to see but overall it was better than I though it would be. I don't do reality shows at all! I don't know how son got me to watch it but after we started, we couldn't stop! Kuddos to the owners and employees of the shop.
