New Jersey Leads the Way with "Pet Buckle Up Laws"

Having your pet hanging his body out the window is now a punishable fine in the State of New Jersey. The Garden State is the first state to enact "Pet Buckle Up Laws."

Congratulations New Jersey! And thank you, Governor Christie.

New Jersey is now the only state in the country where driving with pets loose in the car is a violation of animal cruelty law. Drivers who do not secure their pet can face a ticket of $250 to $1,000 and up to six months in jail. Additionally, allowing your pets to hang his head out the window, having him riding in the back of a truck or curling up on the driver’s lap are also ticket-able offenses under the law.

Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) Chairman and Chief Administrator Raymond P. Martinez and Superintendent of the NJ Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NJSPCA) Col. Frank Rizzo delivered the "Buckle Up Your Pet" safety message prior to the official start of summer because more people take to the roads with their pets in the warmer weather months.

"You wouldn't put your child in the car unrestrained so you shouldn't put your pet in the car unrestrained either," said Col. Rizzo. "What people come to realize only too late is that animals act like flying missiles in an impact and can not only hurt themselves but hurt their human family members too."

Recently, I spoke about the dangers of unrestrained pets in cars at the New York International Auto Show at a breakfast hosted by car manufacturer GM/Chevy. Watch here. It seems that lawmakers have also taken notice.

While pets can be a danger in the car, they are also a hazard if they're not buckled up because an unrestrained pet in an accident can delay emergency workers from acting and can even run away, which could cause another accident.

During the summer months, the NJSPCA Officers will be checking for vehicles traveling to and from the shore areas with dogs hanging their heads out of windows or unleashed dogs traveling in the open back of pick-up trucks.

So, even if you are passing through the Garden State and your pets are not restrained, the po po might git ya! Watch out!

Even if pets are well behaved, in an accident it does not matter! In an accident they will fly like missiles. I'm very happy our pets will be safer, even though I don't think the law was meant to protect them, nevertheless, it will help our pooches. Now, if we can get a law pass against the idiots who leave the dogs in the car, especially in the summer, but also in warmer or colder weather. Those morons should get fined no less than $1k AND jailed no less than 1 year. I don't care if it's a money maker for the state...just make it happen.

I can't believe people fall for this BS. It should be a choice. If your pet can't handle riding in the car with manners then they should be left at home or put behind a barrier in the vehicle. But making a law is only sucking money out of people by the government. Probably another swanky Obama law. Can't he get enough money out of us. His personal budget was 1.4 billion last year. Here is what I see: Sorry to say if my dog was restrained then we both would have been killed. I was driving down the interstate with my heavy duty pickup truck towing the largest U-Haul tailer made. I dozed off and my dog came from the back seat where she was sleeping and began rubbing my right arm with her paw and licking my face to awaken me. We were headed toward the median. If she hadn't done this we both would have been killed. So if she had been restrained how would she have awaken me? Sometime unrestrainted dogs can save lives. I have heard of dogs pulling their owners out of a vehicles after an accidnet. This seatbelt law is another tactic for Uncle Sam to make a buck. I have been driving with my dogs for years and never an incident and I am 53-years old. If my dog was restrained that would cause an accident as she would be distracting me when fighting her way out of her seatbelt. How dumb is this freaking article. It's all about the almighty green stuff. Its just a money maker and again another way to contol people. Nope, not a free country anymore. Suck more money from citizens by giving out tickets. It's like they can't get enough money to stuff in their pockets from us paying taxes. This is plain sick. The rest of the commenters I see got sucked into this seatbelt money maker. A sucker is born every minutes. I guess people can't figure out when the government is trying to make a buck off you. How stupid are people? Really? Suckers!!!!!!!!!!!

Laws = Revenue generators. Cops = collection agents. Courts = supressors of freedom & liberty in the name of justice. New Jersey must be pretty hard up for money to have passed this one. Good night & good luck.

Oh, you got that so right. It's a big ticket item to have this law and fine people. I cannot people fall for this. Some are naive. It never stops amazing me how people fall for this trash and they pay for it. Instead they should be fighting against it. Sure restrain your pet in the car, but why should a person have to pay for it. It's down right stupidity.
