My Cats Saved My Valentine's Day

Published February 14, 2011
I'm usually able to come up with some rather creative ideas for Valentine's Day gifts for my husband. But for the past several weeks I have been wracking my brains trying to find the purrfect Valentine's Day gift for him. Since he is the man who has everything, this year, shopping for his present was extraordinarily frustrating. And while I feverishly surfed the Internet looking for a unique item, everything I ran across was something he already had, or I knew he would hate. It seemed the more I searched; a gift that would really strike his fancy became even more elusive. Since Marty had already warned me not to send him flowers, that avenue was closed. Since both of us could do ourselves a favor by shedding a pound or two, giving him a box of fancy mouth-watering chocolate, which we no doubt would share, certainly seems quite inappropriate. And as the day was approaching fast, I was emotionally at the end of my tether. And even though I had not even left my the house, I was totally exhausted by all this cyber-shopping, so I decided to take a break to clear my head. I flopped down on the living room couch, obviously dejected and morose. By this time I was close to tears. Since we are extremely attuned to one another, Hush Puppy, our Lilac Point Oriental Shorthair must have sensed my gloomy mood. He suddenly jumped down from his perch on our cat tree, rubbed against my leg, jumped into my lap, purring his little heart out. He gazed deeply into my eyes, and folks, you may think I am fabricating this story, but trust me; this little kitty was obviously concerned about my extreme anxiety. He wrapped himself around my neck, kneading on my shoulders until he was sure I was fully relaxed. He connected with me using his best feline ESP, "Why not get Marty a Valentine's Day gift certificate to use at his favorite online store?" Now why didn't I think of that? Eureka! What a great idea! Oozing supportive energy, he followed me into my office, to keep me company and supervise my purchase. The gift certificate was on the way! Boy was I ever relieved! After I was finished with my purchase, happily sitting in front of my computer, Hush Puppy reminded me that he and his brother Hubble, had a Valentine gift that they wanted me to share with our readers; a delightfully relaxing Valentine video created by Thecatdiaries. I am so glad that you, with the help of your cat, were able to find the "purrfect" gift!

Just having them close to me after a bad day is enough for me. My big orange 17 y/o male is my love bug and is on my lap every second he can. Just hearing him purr and me stroking his fur is sedative enough.

My Shadow is also my "nurse kitty".... when I badly injured my leg and was laid up (literally!) for 3 months she was very careful to avoid the leg but spent as much time as possible as close to me as possible, purring away. She can also tell when I'm having a hard day and will spend extra time cuddling. And if I've had an especially tough day, she will "make cat couch" (climb up on my chest and lie down there while I'm reclining in bed watching TV)and then she moves all the way up and puts one paw on my neck and washes my face. Then she puts her head by my neck for a few minutes, purring..... it does work wonders.

Cats just KNOW. And yes, my Rani especially is very intuitive and supportive when I'm having a bad day or feeling blue. She comes and comforts me in such a sweet way. All of my cats are wonderfully loving, of course. But Rani "inherited" her empathy from her spiritual predecessor, Simba.

When I get into bed after a bad-MS-day, both Baby and Rao want to lay on my chest and purrrrrrr - it's such a healing wavelength. Baby is a very loud purrer and he has to go first. Rao has sort of a swallowed-purr, very deep and soft. They Just Know.
