Movie Theater for Dogs: A Hit in Sweden

Published January 27, 2011
Will the term "dog-days" come to include a day out at the movies? You're doggone right...in Sweden, at least, where what is thought to be the world's first movie-theater for dogs debuted during the country's annual pet exhibition in Stockholm earlier this month. The theater, a joint venture between Fox Home Entertainment and Pedgiree, opened to a screening of the canine infused film Marmaduke. According to PeoplePets, there were eight total screenings of the film with at least 20 dogs in attendance at each showing. During the screenings, the animals in attendance were served "goodie-bowls" (PeoplePets) filled with Pedigree pet snacks. Although the snacks may have become the main attraction, there's some solace to be found in not having to leave your pet at home in order to spend an afternoon out. While the concept of watching a film with your pet pal might not be new, Sweden seems to be the first country to actually realize the idea in a public forum. Is this a sign that pet cinemas are going to become a staple of the future? The idea might not be as far-fetched as you think. The response to the doggy movie theater in Sweden was so profound that the festival's organizers have vowed to continue the tradition into next year's exhibition and beyond. I'd have to agree with Cheshire. Although it is good for you to take your best furry 4-legged companion out to build socialization skills, I don't think a movie theater would be the best place. Some dogs may acutally pay attention to the film being presented but I feel many of them would probably cause a distraction, especially with having other dogs around that they'd rather be mingling with. That may also make it hard for other people to pay attention to the movie. Some dogs that aren't properly trained and may either have a "potty accident" or cause a disruption. Perhaps a romp in the dog park would probably be best. :o)

Unbelievable and ridiculous - what did this cost? This money could have gone to fund shelters and health programs to help animals - we do not need to entertain our pets. They get their entertainment from our attention and love - that's all they want and it's free! Give the money to those pets yet to find their forever home - that's more important than dog snacks at a movie!

Good point! I never would have thought of that- it is a waste of $

No, I wouldn't... I would rather take my dog on a long walk or go to the dog park than taking him to a movie theater so he can eat treats. Sure, it's good for socialization, but the movie part isn't necessary. It would be awesome to have more dog-friendly places, but not everyone likes dogs, some people have allergies, and also I don't think bringing a big size dog in a restaurant or store would be very pleasant for the other costumers, and it wouldn't be fair if only small dog breeds owners could keep their best friend with them. Plus, it good for the dog to spend some time on his own. Anthropomorphism, even though it's funny, isn't always what's best for our four-legged friends.

I would like to take my pug Curli but she would be growling and barking if there were any pets in the movie. She may even run up to try to get at the screen to chase a "movie dog"

I would take my dog, Boo the Bichon, because he loves watching TV and all the commercials with dogs on it. He can recognize when certain dog commercials and, if he is in another room, he runs into the den to watch it. Taking him to a movie would be fun, although, he may growl a lot during the movie, because he does this when he sees dogs on TV (or other animals). I love taking my dog with me everywhere. We need more dog-friendly places.

I think with so many nasty people around I rather have my very clean pet with me. Seeing all the dirty neighborhoods in the STates I welcome a dog in a restaurant but have clean streets and parks!!!
