Male or Female Cats: Who's Your Favorite?
Published January 27, 2011
While many of the familiar old-time nursery rhymes are by no means politically correct today, the little ditty describing little girls as "sugar and spice and everything nice" and little boys as "frogs and snails and puppy dog's tails" came to mind while I was reflecting upon a conversation with a friend who asked whether male or female cats were more affectionate toward people.
It seems that this question is one of the more common ones often made by people who may be considering getting a first cat.
In fact Helium.com, a writer's forum, presently has an active debate going about which gender is more affectionate, in the pets and animal section. The present results 65% males with 1152 votes, 35% female with 625 votes. You can check out what the authors have written and cast your vote!
Additionally, over the years, many of my cat-loving friends swear up and down that disposition-wise, neutered male cats far out- trump spayed female kitties and act far more demonstratively toward their human companions.
And while I hate to admit my purrsonal preference are male kitties, since a cat's purrsonality has a so much to do with their genetics and environmental factors, making these kinds of personality generalizations is not only unfair but often inaccurate.
For me, the male cats with whom I have shared my life over the years have been the biggest love bugs, constantly following me around, communicating with me almost non-stop and at night curling up with me under the cover, finding their own precious little ways to show me how much they love me. It's no surprise they hold a very special place in my heart.
But I will never forget and still miss Yo-Yo, my soul mate kitty. She was very special female seal point Siamese with hauntingly beautiful deep blue eyes.
Yo-Yo left her paw prints engraved deeply in my heart. She was an incredibly nurturing little feline who devotedly spent hours kneading on my back massaging any pain away, while she purred softly in my ear lulling me to sleep when I was restless.
