Lost Dog’s Adoption Causes Grief

Published August 3, 2011

A 10-pound Shih Tzu named Gizmo is creating a lot of buzz. According to Ohio.com, the dog’s original owner, Ron Prior, put him on a retractable leash and hooked him outside. When he checked on Gizmo a few minutes later, the 2-year old dog was gone.

According to Ohio.com the shelter logs show that Gizmo was picked up by an animal warden three streets from Prior's home. The woman who adopted the dog, Tonya Graves, saw him in the shelter about 6 days after he was in the shelter.

Prior searched for him endlessly until he finally went to the shelter. After he searched the aisles twice and saw no sign of Gizmo, Prior decided to come back the following week. When Prior returned a week later, he was overjoyed to see Gizmo; but to his surprise he he saw a sign on the cage indicating the dog had been adopted.

Prior notified the shelter that Gizmo was his dog and provided substantial proof. After this, the shelter contacted Graves and explained the confusion. According to Ohio.com, both the shelter and Prior said that Graves agreed to relinquish her claim, but she called back a few minutes later to say she had changed her mind.

Graves felt that this is the right dog for her and that the dog would be better off at her home.

It doesn't sound like the man tried hard to find his dog after reading that he went back to the shelter a week later. When my dog ran off in a big city, I had posters up all over and called the shelter 3 times in one day. After they told me to come to the shelter at the end of the day, I was there showing them my poster. The funny thing was, the shelter said they did not pick up my dog that day, but I still had to do a walk through. After seeing all the sad little lost souls in there and wanting to take them all home, the girl took me down one last row. I heard the cry, Mom Mom (in dog talk). Sure enough there was my boy. He was so excited to see me. What made me mad was I was on the search for my dog the minute he left. Sad to say, the shelter warned me like I was some kind of criminal. While I was in there, I met a man who had been searching for his two little lost dogs for over a month. He was in the shelter every day. He made me cry.

What I don't like about the story I read was that the man sounds like he gave up on his search. To me things happen for a reason. Maybe the little dog should choose. If he runs back to his owner, then he can keep him. If not, he must be happier in his new home! :)

I would also like to know the outcome of this story. What was Gizmo's fate? Please let us know what happened. If it were me, I'd be very upset to have someone else claim my dog. I hope that Gizmo's owner got him back. How did this all turn out?

So what was the final outcome for Gizmo? If the owner had proof that this was his dog wasn't the woman required by law to return him? Please let the readers know how it turned out.
