Lost Dog Returned to Animal Shelter After Reunion with Owner

Lost dog Dusty was featured on a recurring "Today" segment, "Bow to Wow," and spotted by his owner, Ruth Torres, who happened to be watching the show.

A Bronx woman who was reunited with her lost dog Dusty after seeing him on the “Today Show” segment “Bow to Wow” which seeks to find adoptable dogs loving homes has since returned Dusty to the animal shelter.

According to an NBC New York report, Ruth Torres was separated from Dusty three weeks ago after Torres’ brother took the dog. Torres tells NBC New York that she was not aware that Dusty was lost until she saw him on the “Today” segment.

When animal advocate Jill Rappaport and Center for Animal Care and Control official Richard Gentles introduced an Irish Wolfhound named Mooki in the “Bow to Wow” segment, Torres recognized her furry friend immediately.

“I said, 'That's not Mooki! It's Dusty!' I said, 'Oh my God, Mommy, hurry, hurry! Dusty's on TV,’” Torres told NBC New York reporter Pei-Sze Cheng.

After rushing to the Animal Care and Control Center in East Harlem to rescue Dusty, Torres and her mother learned that Dusty had been abandoned in a park in the Bronx. Torres believes that her brother, who she says has been going through some tough times, left the dog in the park and never called his sister to tell her what he had done.

Because Dusty was not wearing dog tags and did not have a microchip or license, shelter workers had no way of identifying Dusty or his owner.

After arriving at the shelter, Torres and her mother decided to get Dusty licensed in order to prevent such a situation from happening again.

Yet, just days after their miraculous reunion, Torres was forced to return Dusty to the shelter.

Since initially losing Dusty, Torres has moved in with her mother and when she tried to acclimate her pooch in a new home it became clear that he would not get along with her mother’s dogs.

Shelter workers confirm that Dusty has been returned to the East Harlem facility that had cared for him and groomed him prior to the “Today” segment.

While Torres feels “awful” for having to part ways with Dusty, a shelter spokesperson tells NBC New York that the Animal Care and Control Center has already received several calls for the dog, and he is confident that Dusty will be placed in a loving home.

Really? She didn't know he was missing for 3 weeks? How is that even possible? Dusty deserves to be in a new, loving family. He's so much better off, and I hope this family never gets another dog as they obviously don't care about them.

No kidding she did not know the dog was missing for 3 weeks so obviously she never cared enough to check and as for her POS brother who dumps a dog because they are going through rough times?

What a terrible family--why would this nit wit have an Irish wolfhound anyway? Or any dog for that matter. At least she returned him to the shelter rather than following her brother's solution and abandon the dog in a park.

She did not really want that dog. She didn't even give it a chance. With proper traiing and obedience he would have acclimated. Bad lady.

Sounds like poor Dusty has never been truly loved by anyone. If you are an animal lover and you have a dog, there is no way in hell your going to put it in a shelter just because it doesnt get along wth other dogs.I have NO respect for people like her OR her stupid brother.

This is exactly why we are in the state we are in. Animals are dispensable. There is no excuse to give your dog up! All these so called "animal lovers". There is no way that I would give my dogs away...none. When I moved and needed to find an apartment..I found one that accepted my two dogs. They are out there. You just have to find them. If Dusty did not get along with her mothers dogs then there are other solutions. I am glad that Dusty will find a home that wants him and will love him. The sad truth is that because this women could not keep Dusty, and he will get new owners, there will be one less dog that will not have a home. Get real! If you give your dog up, even if he finds a home, you are taking away a home for another dog, that will most probably be euthanized! Please Spay and Neuter!
