Television and movie star Katherine Heigl is an animal welfare advocate.

When you think of former television and current movie star Katherine Heigl, you most likely think of her work. For instance, television franchise Grey's Anatomy and the films Knocked Up, 27 Dresses and New Year's Eve all probably come to mind. But did you realize that Heigl is actually an active advocate in the world of animal welfare?

In an exclusive blog for iVillage's CelebVillage blog series, Heigl chronicles her passion for and involvement in the world of animal welfare and rescue. In her blog, Heigl echoes the sentiments of many who favor either no-kill shelters or shelters with very strict euthanasia policies, and has set up the Jason Debus Heigl foundation (in honor of her brother) that champions the cause of ending unnecessary euthanasia in animal shelters.

Since learning of the dire situation that the animal shelter system has been facing nearly four years ago, Heigl has devoted her time and energy to educating people about animal rescue.

In her writing, Heigl's passion for her own pets as well as all animals in need is apparent. One thing's for certain; in regard to the cause of animal welfare, this movie star isn't acting...she's taking action.
