On the Job--Part I

Published March 30, 2011

Being a shop dog is a job with a very special set of requirements. The canine employee must be willing to allow a variety of beings into her second home with the grace and charm of a society hostess. She must be able to engage, or at the very least tolerate, every type of dog. And when it comes time to have fun with visiting dogs, she must be able to fit her play style to that of her guest. I'm proud to report that Millie fills the position admirably, as evidenced by her play session with young Kylie.

Kylie hadn't played with dogs other than her siblings the first time she visited Life on the Leash. Millie approached Kylie with her typical welcome, "Hey new kid! Let's go! Let's wrestle, or run, or do whatever you want to do!" Millie gave her a few bats with her paw, and hopped back and forth to no avail. Kylie was bashful and unsure of what to do, so Millie slowed down her entreaties.

Notice Millie's low, playful posture in this shot (pictured above). Does it look like Kylie is ready to play yet? Nope.

Click through this accompanying slide show to see the rest of Millie and Kylie's play session.
