Irish Breeds- Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier

The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier has fewer terrier attributes than most other Irish breeds. Wheatens are merry and friendly and tend to get in fewer "scrapes" than other terriers, which makes them wonderful pets. The Wheaten is easily recognizable because of its soft, silky coat. The breed is typically 18" tall and is alert and interested in its surroundings.

The Folklore

Farmers who observed the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier healing wounds with their own saliva came to the conclusion that the Wheaten had a special ability to heal. So when family members were taken ill, the Wheaten was called to be at his side and if a family did not own a Wheaten they would borrow one from a neighbor. There are few today who believe the Wheaten has healing powers but the breed still holds a special place in Irish lore.
