The Irish Terrier stands just below the knee of a human and was bred to control vermin on farms. The Irish Terrier is intelligent, independent and courageous and has a rough coat that protects it in all types of weather. The breed's terrific swimming skills led an early breeder of Irish Terriers to surmise that the only reason they were not brought aboard Noah's Ark is because they could so easily swim alongside.
The Folklore
The origin of many Irish Breeds is nebulous due to poor early record keeping. Depending on what pocket of Ireland you ask, the Irish Terrier is believed to be "as old as Erin's green hills" and to others "as wee as a mushroom."
