The typical Glen of Imaal stands only 14" tall, but because of their boundless courage, they are affectionately known as "big dogs on short legs." The "Glen" are considered stoic because they were bred to be silent when working and do not often bark. The breed's history is rooted in the beautiful Glen of Imaal valley in County Wicklow, Ireland, where they were used by peasants to keep their farms free of vermin.
The Folklore
The legend goes that vermin and gopher holes were a substantial problem for farmers. Vermin and gophers would bore holes in the ground and humans and horses often injured or broke ankles in these holes. When the "Glen" arrived and drove away the vermin, the holes disappeared and gave the "Glen" the status of one who wards off evil spirits.
