Husky Treks Two Miles to Visit Owner in Hospital

Published October 5, 2012

One Husky made an incredible two-mile journey to visit his owner in a New York area hospital. Read about it below!

Every pet parent knows how strong the bond is that forms between animals and humans. Every day, our pets show us love in different ways that some may say is simply immeasurable. That said, one dog’s love for his owner might be able to be measured in miles.

According to a story from Fox News, a Husky named Zander trekked over two miles to find and pay a visit to his owner John Dolan, who had been hospitalized. The Husky of the hour reportedly made an epic Lord of the Rings-esque journey, purportedly braving a parkway and a dangerous four-lane road to find his adopted father. Apparently, Zander found his way by tracking Dolan’s scent, a pretty incredible feat considering Dolan’s wife said she’d never taken the dog to that location before.

Sadly, Dolan’s wife noted that Zander was visibly depressed when Dolan left for the hospital. Spurred by his desire to see him, Zander embarked on his journey to the hospital, where he was scooped up by a hospital employee. It wasn’t the last time the dog would try the trek again, but he was picked up on his way there the second time around.

Zander clearly has a strong bond with his adopted father, who took him into his home close to five-years ago when he rescued him from an animal shelter. The Husky's hustle to see his owner clearly serves as yet another demonstration of the special bond we can share with animals.

I hope the hospital staff takes pity on poor Zander and lets him see Dolan, if only for a minute. Loyalty like that should be rewarded.

Love it! The unconditional love we receive from our 4-legged friends is unbelievable! What a great story!

I work 3rd shift at a personal care home and take my pit/beagle with me about once a week. Last 4th of July, I left him out in the yard & fell asleep. I guess the fireworks scared him and he got out. He probably came to the front door and thought I wasn't there. So I must be at work! He crossed two busy streets (if he took the direct route). Staff told me that when someone opened the door, he just waltzed in like he belonged there. The distance is a little over 1/4 mile, so not as far as Zander. But we were all still amazed.

I think they better let the dog in. It would be the best for both dog and patient.

After all that, I hope they made an exception to the rules and let Zander see John!

I see rescue dogs become very attached to their new guardians all the time. Somehow they know they have been rescued and are very grateful. The funny part to me is how grateful the owners are in return. They feel so lucky to have such a loyal pet.

My Puggle, Stewie, definitely misses me when I'm not home. When I leave for work, he lays on my bed the entire day until I return and that's when he gets up to greet me and then eats his food. The remainder of the evening he is by my side at all times! He's a sweetheart! I do wish he'd hang out with my husband during the day though.
