How Much Do I Love Thee? Maybe Too Much...

Published November 23, 2007
Love me too much? Nah! Okay, I admit it. I'm a woman who loves cats too much...although I really don't think that's a possibility. Can you have too much money? Too much love? Too many flats in the South of France? Love us too much? Impossible!!!! If you're reading this, there's a chance you're just like me. We're brethren caught in the web of addiction. People talk about us... "She's putty in their paws," they snicker. "He's a pushover for anything with whiskers," they sneer. And it's all true. Nothing's too good for our puddies-not spa manicures, fancy collars, new couches, voice lessons. Love me too much? Never!!!! Worse still, we neglect our loved ones. I, myself, spend so much time with the cats, there really isn't that much left for my husband. And when we do arrange a quiet moment-usually in the garage so my babies won't get jealous-I'm a nervous wreck. What if they think I've abandoned them? Love me too much? Go on and try Okay, so maybe I do go a bit overboard. We all do. But can we throw off the shackles of cat-co-dependency? Can we lead a normal life? Probably not. But we'll never know until we try. So starting today, I've vowed not to be a slave to my cats. But first, I'll just finish crocheting these gold-laced cat booties, then make their fresh shrimp puree with mashed salmon and warm cream. We can't rush these things, now can we? Is loving cats too much a dilemma for you? Feedback? (No hairballs, please.) Email stories@Petside.com. ALL PHOTOS BY: Maggie Swanson c copyright 07

Cats are therapy. If I'm feeling anxious or blue, all I have to do is have my cat come and tell me it's time to hold and scritch him, and in moments, my heartbeat slows, my blood pressure comes back to normal, and the endorphins flow. Nirvana.
