A: Many animals get motion sickness in the car just like some people do. Sometimes this may be because your cat is not used to car rides. If you only take them in the car once a year they don't have much time to get used to trips.

Try taking your cat on short car rides so that he or she can get used to it. Also, do not feed your animal for at least 4 hours before a car ride. Many times they will do better if they do not have a full stomach. There are over the counter drugs available for motion sickness. Such drugs are those containing dimenhydrinate or meclizine.

Since cats require different drug dosages than we do, it is best to consult with your veterinarian before giving your pet any medications. Your vet may even be able to provide you with medications designed specifically for pets.
