A: Recurrent ear infections are extremely frustrating and one of the most common things we see in practice. I recommend cleaning the ears about twice weekly with a good ear cleaner. A mixture or vinegar and distilled water can also be used at home. While this is ok for cleaning, actual infections should not be left untreated. A topical antibiotic and/or antifungal may be necessary as well. Also be sure to keep the hair in and around your pet's ear very short.

I am a groomer and sometimes have to shave dogs short due to mats or owners wanting a cut that is easier to maintain. I let the puppies run around and play a little before they get picked up, which is a great reward for a social pup. It is very important that owners tell their pup how beautiful they are, even if they look a little different. Never laugh at the new haircut, and remember if your dog had to be shaved because of mats, it is not puppy's fault. Dogs can't brush their own hair, and daily maintenance is owner's responsibility. Find a nice groomer who will take the time to show you how to brush and comb your baby. If you love the shorter haircut, just tell your four legged friend how great he looks, and don't let the hair grow out too much before the next clip, that way the change is not so dramatic. Good luck, there are a lot of good groomers who will take good care of your pup, and when you find one you like, go back to the same person for every haircut, even if there's a long wait. you can get on a regular schedule, which groomers love.
