While searching through the rubble of his home, David Vanderhoofven was reunited with his cat Harley on May 24, in Joplin, Missouri. Vanderhoofven lost his wife Darian and son Joshua in the tornado Sunday.
Volunteers are scrambling to post mug shots of one lost pet after another on the Joplin Humane Society’s website.
Last week’s colossal tornado in Joplin, Missouri took at least 134 lives while destroying over 8,000 homes and apartments. Meanwhile over 600 displaced pets have been rescued by the Joplin Humane Society and American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).
Amidst all this loss, seeing one of your own on that site, and knowing he’s being cared for until you can get there, must offer some much-needed relief to stricken families.
“If the guardians who are reunited can take them, they do. If they can’t, we’ll take care of them until they can,” Karen Aquino, head of the Joplin Humane Society, told GlobalAnimal.org.
To help the volunteers in Joplin care for as many tornado-orphaned pets as possible, www.freekibble.com and www.freekibblekat.com will donate 100% of the kibble raised today to the Joplin Humane Society, which will also be distributing the food to families in the community struggling to care for their pets.
Even better, Halo, Purely for Pets, is matching the donation if the kibble reaches a million pieces for the day!
So visit , www.freekibble.com and www.freekibblekat.com and answer today’s trivia question to lend help (and kibble) where it’s needed.
