Help for Low-Income Pet Owners

Published June 22, 2011

Most people have the best intentions when adopting or taking in a pet. However, for many low-income pet owners, it may mean neglecting some of the pricier aspects of pet ownership.

Fortunately, the pet blog Itchmo gathered a list of great resources to help pet parents in need pay for everything from medical care to spay/neuter services for pets. Here are just a few:

1.  AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association’s Helping Pets Fund): The AAHA Helping Pets Fund was launched in 2005 and makes veterinary care possible for sick or injured pets whose owners are experiencing financial hardship.

2. RIVMA Companion Animal Foundation (CAF): Established in 2004 by the Rhode Island Veterinary Medical Association, this fund provides care for the sick and injured pets of low-income pet owners.

3. IMOM (In Memory of Magic): This all volunteer-based charity was founded in 1998. IMOM offers financial assistance for pets with life-threatening conditions, as well as for rescues, and spay/neuter services. The IMOM is lovingly named after the founders’ departed cat, Magic.
