Bideawee, an animal shelter in New York, is in great need after Hurricane Sandy. Learn how you can help the shelter and its animals today.
Bideawee has suffered unimaginable damage in the wake of Hurricane Sandy and needs your help today.
Despite all of the prior planning and precautions for Hurricane Sandy, Bideawee will be feeling the impact of this historical storm for a very long time. Bideawee in Manhattan has been on the edge of the East River for more than 100 years and suffered heavy flooding when the storm surge pushed the river over its banks. The rush of water swamped the isolation units and holding areas and destroyed the elevator that is used to transport animals from the adoption center to the animal hospital to receive their life-saving medical care. Due to this damage, Bideawee is still not open in Manhattan and can't serve the needs of the animals and people that rely on them.
Thankfully, all of the animals were evacuated safely to their Wantagh facility on Long Island that has been relying on generator power since the storm first hit metropolitan New York. The dedicated staff was working around the clock with the aid of a generator until last evening when the generator failed after 11 straight days of use. Undeterred, the staff continues to care for the animals by flashlight and extra blankets ensuring the health and safety of every animal in its care. They are working to secure a large portable generator, but as you can imagine in the midst of all the destruction generators are in very short supply.
Although Bideawee had the benefit of foresight and planning, nobody could have imagined the damage that their facilities incurred and the lost business they have sustained due to Hurricane Sandy. To repair all of the damage and return to providing pets the care, compassion and safe-haven that Bideawee has been offering for more than a century will take hundreds of thousands of dollars. In their time of greatest need, your help will enable them to mend their facilities so they can ensure Bideawee's future of mending animals' broken hearts and bones and finding them forever homes.
