Happy Endings: Sticky the Cat Finds New Home: Arrest Made

Published October 2, 2009
Yesterday, some fantastic breaking news widely circulated around the Internet. I do so love happy endings to stories about animal cruelty, and this is one that will "stick" with me for quite a long time as I am sure it will with all animal lovers. It was just only the other day that I wrote about the beautiful tabby kitty who was so cruelly wrapped in duct tape, and how a rather substantial reward of $2000 was offered for the capture and conviction of the perpetrator of this brutal crime. This story touched a huge number of people and "Sticky" won the hearts of thousands of animal lovers around the country. In fact, PSPCA received $2,075 in donations by people who mentioned "Sticky". This was an amazing response to a kitty in need! Photo credit: Philly.com While a handful of calls claiming ownership were received, according to Liz Williamson, the spokesperson for The Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, (PSPCA), none seemed legitimate since no one followed through. Ms.Williamson said, "They were given the opportunity to come in and meet with our officers and prove ownership. Only one person even set up an appointment and that person did not keep the appointment." However, more than 100 requests were made to adopt the adorable kitty who had endured such a blatant act of torture, and were considered on a first call- first serve basis. A family that wishes to remain anonymous has now provided a forever loving home for "Sticky". This said it is not known if this family will continue to call her Sticky. I do hope that this generous and loving family will ultimately come forward and end the mystery. To make this good news even better, James Davis, a 19-year-old Philadelphia man, was arrested on suspicion of executing this crime. According to the Associated Press, Davis, if found guilty, will face both a sentence of two years in prison and a minimum fine of $1,000. In commenting about Davis, Ms. Williams said, "He did not have any previous convictions or complaints related to animal cruelty," The delicious icing on the cake is PSPCA reported that since the "Sticky" case made such an impact on animal lovers, the number of cats adopted from the shelter rose nearly four-fold over the previous year at this same time. PSPCA staff attributes the increase to the huge amount of publicity that Sticky's case engendered. It is indeed heartening to know that cruelty to animals is finally being recognized as serious crimes which warrant more than just a slap on the wrist. I am far more optimistic that law enforcement personnel will persist in the arrest and conviction of those who inflict torture on these innocent creatures. Please share your thoughts about this breaking news, by leaving a comment.

Coldfire, you're a pathetically ignorant and highly undereducated, benighted moron.

I've been a hunter and tracker for over 30 years now and the ONLY animal I've ever found to be INTENTIONALLY malicious. . . .for the sole sake of malice. . . is human.

Seriously . . .get a life dude.

Stalking whitetail deer in the “wilds” of North America Mr. Hunter/Tracker, does not qualify you to dispute hard scientific recording facts about animal behavior.

Chimpanzees will rip a baby chimp from their mother’s arms and eat the baby in front of her.

Dolphins have been documented hunting and killing smaller porpoises for sport.

Male lions will kill the cubs of mother lions in order to force to female to go into heat again.

Well fed housecats kill songbirds at best out of reflex or boredom, and at worst for amusment.

All mammals of sufficient intelligence have the capacity for cruelty built right in.

Yet we have people like you who allegedly can use 'tools' to civilize himself, but you are bereft of thought on what cruelty is to an animal, and why indeed are you on this site at all other than to antagonize animal lovers? You obviously speak from experience re the cost of keeping a man in jail, well my suggestion is you stop torturing defenseless animals then you won't have to rot amongst the dross of the world for your cruelty. Depart from the intellectual cave of savagery you currently reside in, and live amongst the more civilized of your species.

If you would send a man to prison for an act such as this then you are not even close to being civilized Domus Canus. It’s terribly short sighted of you to call for imprisonment and not know what the true costs of imprisonment are. It’s a very uncivilized notion to think that you can solve cultural, or behavioral problems by “locking them up”. It’s also highly inappropriate to accuse me of both abusing animals and 2nd being imprisoned for it.

Coldfire 19, your probably the person who did this, based on your comments, cruelty is cruelty. I assume you do not have pets or want them and that is fine, people who abuse animals or humans should rot in jail.

· Dumb kids who duct tape cats should not rot in jail. What planet are you from? It costs $28,000 to keep a man in jail for a year. How many kittens could you rescue, or cats could you spay for that? We don’t need to clog up the courts with nonsense like this. There are REAL problems out there you know. At the end of the day its just a damn cat. Why don’t you do something useful and tutor an under privileged child.
· 85 percent of all juveniles who interface with the juvenile court system are functionally illiterate.
Maybe if the boy had read a book on philosophy a few years prior we wouldn’t be having this conversation in the 1st place.
