George the Great Dane: Incredible Features

George the Great Dane with owner, David Nasser.

George the Great Dane, owned by David and Christine Nasser of Tucson, Arizona has stepped into the annals of the "Guinness Book of World Records" as the tallest canine ever recorded.

According to an article in the Daily Mail, George measures 7 feet, 3 inches from nose to tail, standing at almost 43 inches at the shoulder. He weighs in at an astounding 245 pounds, 100 pounds heavier than the average Great Dane.

Guinness has thrown out the gauntlet by inviting other pet owners to measure their pets. The editor-in-chief of Guinness World records, Craig Glenday said, "This record has also sparked great interest in finding other pet records, so we're asking everyone to check their dog houses, scratch posts and under the bed- they just might be living with a record-breaking pet.

The categories announced in their search for pet records are the "longest ears on a dog", the "smallest dog", the "oldest dog" and the "oldest cat." It was gratifying to learn that there is no category for the heaviest pet, which will certainly prevent some avid competitors from over indulging their pets to win a title.

David Nasser told the Daily Mail that George consumes 110 pounds of food a month, and as a pampered pup, he gets to sleep on his very own king-size bed. I think this is only fair since due to no fault of his own, George became much too large to share a bed with the Nassers. George and David however still do share sitting on the same couch when hanging out in the living room. I can only imagine how strange that must appear to some on-lookers.

According to David, when George was purchased at seven-weeks-of-age, he was a very large puppy weighing in at 17 pounds. His paws were so huge that people kept telling the Nassers that George was much larger than the average Great Dane puppy. Little did they know that their delightful dog would set a world record when turned four years old,

Even Dr. William Wallace, a veterinarian at the Buena Pet Clinic in Tucson was amazed by George the Great Dane. He witnessed the necessary documentation for the Guinness World Record and said, "In my 45 years of experience working with giant breed dogs, without question, George is the tallest dog I have ever seen."

I saw this dog on TV the other day, and I musst say he is one big fellow. But even more important is his disposition. He appeared top be very friendly and completely unaware of his size. And he has a very loving family that seems to have a lot of fun with him.
