Unfortunately, hip dysplasia is a common occurrence in a number of dog breeds. Hip dysplasia involves the thickening of the bone at the hip joint when the femoral head angles outward. A gap in the joint occurs, creating unstable motion for a dog in moderate cases.
In severe cases, the pain becomes very uncomfortable and leads to crippling in dogs, but there are exercises to help.
Exercises ideal for dogs with this condition include swimming and walking on a lead on the grass. In general, any low-impact exercise is ideal and allows the muscle and strength to gradually return.
If in doubt, check with your veterinarian for the appropriate level and type of exercise.
