The Yellow Dog Project: A "Warning" System for Dog Walkers

The Yellow Dog Project might be able to help a reactive dog like this guy.
I lived with a reactive dog for many years. Our Boxer Sumner was frightened when we came upon other dogs during our walks, so he would bark and look menacing even though he was petrified. Well meaning strangers with dogs would often mistake his barky display for excitement and continue to approach us, even though I tried to let them know that a nose-to-nose greeting wasn’t a good idea.
There’s a movement afoot (or should I say “a-paw”) to help clearly communicate that some dogs need space when out for a walk: The Yellow Dog Project. If you see a dog with a yellow ribbon or scarf on his leash it means that he needs a buffer around other dogs. According to The Yellow Dog Project, dogs might need space because:
- They have health issues
- They’re in training
- They’re recovering from a surgical procedure
- They’re fearful
- They’re reactive
I think this is an easy, elegant solution to a common challenge. I’m going to start giving out yellow ribbons at Life on the Leash and hope that this great idea catches on!
