Q: My dog's nose is dry; my Bloodhound's nose has been very dry on the outside for about one week. Is this a reason for me to worry? I always heard that a dog with a dry nose could be sick.
A: A dog's dry nose does not necessarily equal a sick dog! Dogs have wet noses because some of their tear glands empty into their noses. But just because the nose is dry, it does not mean there is something wrong with the tear gland.
For instance, a dog's nose can get dry and warm when the dog is sleeping or out in warmer weather.
The wetness and temperature of your dog's nose can change throughout the day as well, and that is perfectly normal. So if your dog's dry nose is not inflamed or infected, she should be fine, especially if she is eating and playing normally!
However, if your dog's nose has changed texture and became flaky, crusty or is showing discoloration or sores, it could be cause for concern. This may be a signal of an underlying skin condition. If your dog's nose is showing any of these symptoms, have him checked out by a vet.

Its completely normal. Her nose is cold and wet when she's excited about something. Like her tail it helps to understand what she is thinking. -Gauthier, Houghtaling and Williams
