According to a Fox Philadelphia affiliate, a man with a guide dog for the blind was turned away from waiting in the office of a doctor.

The local Fox affiliate in Philadelphia is reporting that a man with a guide dog for the blind was turned away and refused service in the office of a doctor.

According to the report, Dr. Priya Punjabi, a medical professional in the Philadelphia area, refused to allow local man Joe Cichonski and his dog Hero to wait in the office for his wife's appointment.

"The dog is not allowed in the office, it is a pet," Punjabi allegedly told Cichonski.

The catch: Hero is Cichonski's lifeline, as Cichonski is considered legally blind. He can only see a small bit of light from one eye, and from the other eye he can see nothing. Without Hero, it is impossible for Cichonski to get around.

After the incident in the lobby, the doctor refused to conduct the scheduled examination with Cichonski's wife.

All in all, it's not very nice treatment for a guide dog during a week that is supposed to honor assistance dogs.

Should there be legal ramifications for this doctor's supposed actions? Let us know what you think in a comment!

Has anyone thought that perhaps this doctor has a phobia against dogs?

That could be but the dog was in the waiting room. I have seen plenty of guide dogs and they do not move from where they are unless instructed to do so. If fear was the case the doctor could have said that and still seen his patient since she was not with the dog inside the exam room. I just think like in a lot of cases, there's always a better way to handle to things.

That "doctor" is a fool. I hope all his patients quit him.

To many people are calling their pets guide or companion animals to break the rules everyone else has to live by. What can be done about that.

service dogs should be wearing a sign showing they are a working dog.my friend has one and she is required to put a vest on her dog when she goes out. it has a handicapped emblem on it.

If he is legally blind, how is he breaking any rules? The doctor should be sued. This kind of treatment should be illegal. It's like asking a paralyzed person to give up a wheelchair, or an elderly person to give up a walker. What an ass.
