Could It Cost Up to $4,000 for Military Personnel to Ship Their Pets?

Could it really cost military personnel up to $4,000 to ship their pets overseas? A new policy change indicates that could very well be the case.

America's servicemen and women have chosen what is nothing short of the most valiant profession; each day they go to work, they put their lives on the line to protect America's freedoms. While we should be showing these people nothing but appreciation, it seems that a federally contracted airline, United, has lost sight of that, at least when it comes to appreciating pet-loving military personnel.

According to a report from Stripes.com, the cost of shipping a pet during a service member's permanent change of station could rise to up to $4,000 from what was once a flat fee of roughly $280 per pet.

The move comes as the result of a merger between Continental Airlines and United Airlines, which are both federally contracted carriers. As part of their merger, United is going to drop its flat rate for pets being shipped as excess baggage and require all pets to be shipped as cargo. For those serving in the Pacific, this could mean that the cost of shipping a pet back to the United States could range anywhere between $1,400 and $4,000, depending on the animal's size. It is a cost that is not picked up by the military, as the military already gets the initial cost of the flight at a reduced cost through its contract.

The new policy change United is initiating does not apply to what are known as Patriot Express flights, or flights chartered as official missions, which already have pet spaces set aside. The issue, however, is that one must be on official orders only to use a Patriot Express flight. Additionally, Patriot Express flights are often far less direct than commercial flights, making them less convenient for travelers.

As a result of the policy change, some fear that many military pets could be left behind, as the military personnel will not be able to afford the outrageous price that United will charge to ship their beloved pets on commercial flights.

What do you think about United's policy that could hurt pet-loving military families? Share your thoughts in a comment.

I think that it's outrageous that this airline would charge our military up to $4000 to ship the family pet. Family pets are part of that family & to leave them behind because of this outrageous fee, makes me want to cry. These men & women are protecting our freedom & all they want to do is take the family pet to wherever they are stationed along with the rest of their family. SHAME SHAME SHAME United airlines. I will never fly on your airline again unless you drop this fee!!!!

I really didn't like United or Continental anyway. Their employees are NOT nice at all. Their rates aren't always the best and their planes are behind the times which makes first class feel like a big economy seat. I'm not flying with them ANYMORE. Thanks for making it easy to decide which airline to fly next time. If the government has a contract with either of these airlines, they should terminate it and find a better airline.

United has placed no value to these heroic pets many of whom have saved lives of our military personnel. Come on United, everything seems to be "bottom line". Place value on these heroic animals.

This is an outrage!!As these men and women put their lives on the line every day for their country, beloved pets should fly for free. If not free than at a considerably reduced rate. What is it thats so hard for these airlines to understand?Pets are peoples lifelines, their companions,"kids". Would an airline charge 4,000 to ship a child or other loved one? Shame on you United, this is so unacceptable!!

That United would charge a fee to send a military pet home is just outrageous. I will make every effort to NOT fly United again.
