Paying Homage to Horses this Hoilday Season

"There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man," Winston Churchill.

In describing his feelings about horses, Sir Winston Churchill said, “There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man." These words cannot be disputed!

Horses are magnificent creatures that can touch our hearts so deeply few words can convey the reason why those of us who love horses are drawn to them with such an incredible bond.

Horses have captured people’s imagination throughout time. Courageous horses have carried soldiers into battle, trusting them with their lives. Many of these brave warriors were even willing to sacrifice themselves to save their beloved horses—regardless of strategic decisions. And the feistiest horse can become as gentle as a lamb when positioned as a therapy horse with a disabled child sitting on their back—they instinctively know the difference.

There is that special something about the depth and the sparkle of a horse’s eye, that once you have gazed into them, it’s an experience that cannot be forgotten. Horse lovers know precisely what I am talking about.  It has always been a mystical experience for me.

Many people have not had a personal relationship with a horse, nor have they experienced the overwhelming joy of the unique trusting and loving bond that develops over the years between a horse and their owner. But for reasons that still remain somewhat elusive, we have been riveted to the equine species for eons. They have been an inspiration for awe-inspiring art and photography, for books, films and powerful theatrical dramas that capture the essence of these extraordinary animals. Just watch this YouTube clip to get a sense of how horses continue to move us in the digital age.

I am truly grateful for the connections I have had with the horses who have passed through my life. I am eternally blessed by their gifts, which inspired me to share my love for horses in celebration of the Thanksgiving Day spirit.

Feeling the horse spirit this Thanksgiving? Have a horse film festival on Netflix with these top 30 horse movies. Or donate to help special sanctuaries like Proud Spirit and supporting legislation that stops horse abuse and slaughter. And may you be blessed by the essence that all animals carry, and forever rejoice in the love you share with them; for the ability to love animals is a gift never to be taken for granted. Have a joyous Thanksgiving.

Horses are indeed beautiful and magnificent beings. They have been important tradionally in my background, and they deserve kindness and compassion as do all living beings. For another look at horses, check out "WILD HORSES AND RENEGADES" airing on the Documentary Channel (DOC) to see the truth about what is being done to the last wild horses on the continent.

WOW! If that video doesn't inspire one to feel thankful for the beauty of nature --and the nature of beauty-- I don't know what will. There is such magnificence in horses. Thanks for sending that, Jo!

Thanks so much for this, Jo. After many, many years of no horses - at 60, I have once again gotten back in touch with the best animal on earth! Grace is a Paint, and she's just beautiful. She will be 6 in March... by spring we will be riding... and who knows, maybe there will be another horse on the horizon since I'm sure I won't want to share her!!! Happy Thanksgiving....
