Cats: Unstoppable Heat-Seeking Missiles

Published August 5, 2010

Considering the extremely oppressive heat, temperatures climbing close to 100 degrees, and our air conditioners working overtime, I find it rather purrplexing that our two cats, Hush Puppy and Hubble, are still behaving like the heat-seeking missiles we know them to be.

They go to great measures to locate the warmest spots in our home. And once a particularly juicy one is discovered, they will seriously fight amongst themselves to claim it. Hubble, our white Oriental Shorthair, is particularly fond of snuggling on the floor mats in front of the refrigerator's exhaust fan, which endlessly pumps out hot air to his delight.

On the other hand, Hush Puppy, who happily assumes the role of a feline scientist, enjoys proving his theory that warm air rises. He always find those treasured hot spots located atop a cat tree or on the plush luxurious red bathmat, which we deliberately draped for him on the top of our bedroom dresser.

I start perspiring just watching the two cats hanging out on these super warm areas of our home. I just don't understand their behavior at all.

I mean folks, I am on the prowl during these dog days (pardon the expression) of August to find some cool breezes. Even our swimming pool water temperature is more like a hot tub these days, which infuriates me.

But cats really do appear to "like it hot" This bizarre fact is, without a doubt, proven as a fact by the cat-loving feline cartoon-video artist Simon Tofield in one of his recent short films. It's received over 5 million hits after it was uploaded to YouTube by Simonscat.

If your cats are anything like my two boys, you might even recognize some of your kitty's behavior as you watch "Simon's Cat 'Hot Spot'." At the same time, help yourself to some welcome giggling as well.

I love Simons Cat. Yes our cats adore curling up around the wood stove during the winter. I have to admit though that with the hot weather they have been enjoying the AC in the bedroom.

This is SOOOOOO our family! Although my calico and her tiny striped sis each enjoy curling up in the guest bath sink, too -- go figure?

My cats always found the hottest spots in the house, and, like Simon's cat, would find a way to push me aside if I blocked a "hot spot". Loved the cartoon!

Well this is good to know. I have a friend who keeps his cats outside and I have been worried about the heat for them. I can rest a little easier knowing this.

Yup...I have 3 cats, and each one finds a choice spot in the sun to sleep the afternoon away, even when the temps hover around 100 degrees here in North Carolina. And they will move to follow the sun as the day goes on. Must be because they once were desert animals, ya think?
