Cats and Water: Are they really enemies?

Published October 22, 2009

Dispelling ancient myths is one of my favorite hobbies. I especially love to debunk those urban legends that have been passed down from generation to generation that pertain to cats. Those as "Men don't like cats", and "Cats are sneaky" are some of my all time favorites.

I also love watching cat related videos which are both humorous and well made, which this little piece certainly fits the bill in both departments. The background jazz is very appealing as well.

But after you finish watching the hysterical, thigh slapping video of a French kitty uploaded to YouTube by HolaKenty who so does such a tremendous job at thoroughly discrediting one of the most popular ones, "Cats hate water", you will have to admit that it certainly demonstrates that some cats are fascinated with the "wet stuff".

I particularly found this attractive kitty's rather unique technique of washing his face and ears a complete delight. I also think his particular drinking contraption far surpasses any of those costly automatic water fountain dispensers, which our cats hated due to its very unpleasant noise.

I wonder if I can teach our cats to help themselves to our kitchen faucet when they are thirsty . . . but on second thought, living in Florida with the exorbitant cost of water, perhaps this is not so wise. I sure hope that this petite chat's human pawrents have reasonable water rates.

Cats love running water, at least my 5 do. I have a fountain and they hate it when I have it off to clean it. Before I left a bucket in the bathtub and left it dripping, but the cat fur was doing havoc to my pipes. My kitten loves being sprayed, puts her whole head in the fountain. Believe me, I know my cats get enough water because I have to clean the cat boxes. The cat in the video just loves the water. The people who think this cat is being harmed in any way are morons.

Both of my cats LOVE to drink from a running faucet. It doesn't matter that I give them fresh water twice a day, once I'm in the kitchen or bathroom both of them are ready for me to turn the water on - mind you neither of them enjoy a flea dip or a bath on the occasion when it has been required to get something out of their fur that could be dangerous to them (oil from under a car). Even when I draw a bath both of my cats sit on the edge of the tub and mess with the running water or drink from it when it's cold. They're not "desprate for water" or diabetic like some of these clowns assume. Now if your pet is displaying other signs like not eating or are lathargic then yeah, of course you should get them checked out. Clearly these people who are freaking out either aren't around cats or have their head's in the sand. Everyone has a personal pleasure, human or otherwise, why can't a cat enjoy playing with or drinking from running water? Chill out, people.

My Petmate water fountain started making a loud noise so I unplugged it and want to get rid of it. I hate to put it in the trash where it will go into landfill, but I don't know what else to do with it. Any ideas? I guess this question would also apply to any small household appliance, like a coffee maker, steam iron, or blender. Can these be recycled?
