The Catio, a Feline Delight

Catio

A catio is any, safe outdoor enclosure for your cat.

The catio is gaining popularity as a way to let cats enjoy the outdoors safely.

For cat lovers, our lifelong mission is to find creative methods to spoil our beloved kitties, and the catio is no different.

Cat aficionados find our own compelling ways to provide interesting and stimulating environments for our cats, since kitties can easily become bored, lethargic couch potatoes. With an ample supply of cat trees, scratching posts, interactive toys and cardboard boxes placed strategically around the house, most cats will thrive beautifully.

But then there is that controversial question about whether it is essential for cats to have access to the great outdoors to further enhance their lives. Some feline experts claim that indoor cats live significantly longer, healthier lives. They also offer some rather amazing suggestions to keep indoor cats amused and stimulated.

Nonetheless, you see your cat sitting at the windowsill, looking longingly at the outside world and you can't help but feel a tinge of guilt feeling that kitty is being deprived. If that is the case, cat lovers, the other day in an article in The New York Times online, I ran across the "Catio" which offers an excellent compromise.

Catios are gaining popularity in cities and suburban areas. One Park Slope couple, Mary Sillman and Martin Stein, fashioned a Catio for Buster, their 9 year-old gray cat on half of their small deck.

An architect, Mr. Stein built their Catio, which Buster can reach through a window. Ms. Sillman said, "He just loves looking into the gardens below and people's backyards."

Fifty-year-old Rose-Marie Whitelaw, another Park Slope dweller who claims to be handy with copper piping and a blowtorch, transformed her 10-by-20 foot deck into kitty Nirvana fashioning a Catio out of deer fencing, chicken wire and pipes. According to the article she, "erected a seven-foot railing that the cats cannot climb, and then spray-painted it black so it would be less obtrusive."

Fortunately there are now commercial Catios on the market so folks who don't feel adept at carpentry may add to the enrichment of their kitty's lives. A nine-year old business in Port Washington, N.Y., Kittywalk Systems, run by Jeff and Lise King, sell modular cat enclosures resembling the Habitrail system for hamsters.

They can be made into cat-size kingdoms or used individually.

Pictured above is the Fun Run Outdoor Cat Enclosure available as low as $39.99.

Isn't spoiling kitties fun? Do you have a catio?

I had a cat "tube" constructed to hang attached to the side of the house. It wraps around the east-north-west(the porch, with 2 window access portals; my bedroom and the laundry room. There is also access to under the back wood deck with plenty of cedar mulch, so they may still have the pleasure of being on the ground without being plagued with fleas. A lot of people stop to see what it is and why there are cats walking around 'in the air'. I have three neutered male cats and they enjoy it tremendously. Sometimes, they have their own 'indy 500 race'! The all wire cage really bounces then! There are several wood platforms if they so choose, however, they prefer to nap on the all wire parts. My oldest, Andy, when he hears us talking about the 'tube', will jump in & start rolling around to show us how much he likes it. The eaves of the house and the front porch give them some protection from the rain, but, they alway have the option to jump in thru a window during a bad storm.

I'm fortunate to have a handyman husband as well. My cats have an awesome "cat run" that they hang out in to bird watch without harm. There's plenty of grass to frolic in and plenty of hanging out space for my 7 "indoor" cats. But a couple of the older ones had rather have the comforts of air conditioning so just lounge on the sofa inside. There's a pet door from the kitchen to the screened porch, and from the screened porch to the cat run. My husband says when he dies he wants to come back as one of my pets. P.S. my birds have their own room and also an outside aviary with bird bath and mister system.

I have a husband who loves to build things. He built the cats an outdoor enclosure made from kennel panels. Then he put a roof over it and shingled the roof to match the house. The cats are safe to play in the enclosure and can come and go as they please. Some of the cats love the outdoors and others do not care to be outside. LOL

Catios are indeed feline Paradise. We built one in the desert for our in-house clowder, and another onto the stables for our "stables crew", with a mister to keep 'em cool in summertime, and there was already a corrugated overhang to shade 'em. They loved these Catios!

Ms. Whitelaw is a friend of mine for 15 years. I can tell you that she is an expert with a blowtorch, miter saw and numerous other tools and implements.
